Complete Guide to Image Resizing — Pixels, Percentage, and Presets

Everything you need to know about resizing images for web, print, social media, and documents.

Complete Guide to Image Resizing — Pixels, Percentage, and Presets

Understanding Image Dimensions

Digital images are made of pixels — tiny squares of color. An image that is 1920x1080 has 1,920 pixels across and 1,080 pixels down, totaling about 2 million pixels (2 megapixels).

Three Ways to Resize

By Pixels

Enter exact width and height values. Enable "maintain aspect ratio" to prevent distortion.

By Percentage

Scale the image by a percentage. 50% makes it half the size in each dimension (25% of the total pixels).

By Preset

Choose from common sizes like HD (1280x720), Full HD (1920x1080), Instagram Square (1080x1080), or Passport (413x531).

Resizing for Different Uses

For Web

  • Blog images: 1200x800 px
  • Thumbnails: 300x200 px
  • Hero images: 1920x1080 px
  • Keep file size under 200 KB for fast loading

For Social Media

  • Instagram Post: 1080x1080 px
  • Instagram Story: 1080x1920 px
  • Facebook Cover: 820x312 px
  • Twitter Header: 1500x500 px
  • LinkedIn Banner: 1584x396 px

For Print

  • A4 at 300 DPI: 2480x3508 px
  • A4 at 150 DPI: 1240x1754 px
  • Passport photo: 413x531 px (35x45mm at 300 DPI)

For Documents

  • Exam applications: Varies by exam (200x230, 275x354, etc.)
  • Passport applications: 630x810 px
  • ID cards: As specified by issuing authority

Maintaining Quality When Resizing

  • Downscaling (making smaller) — Almost always looks good
  • Upscaling (making larger) — Causes blurriness. Avoid upscaling more than 150%
  • Aspect ratio — Always maintain it unless you have a specific reason not to
  • Format — JPEG for photos (slight quality loss), PNG for graphics (lossless)
